He practiced the form of prayer called hesychasm. Which was the continual prayer of the Jesus Prayer. At the age of 23 he read the lives of the Church Fathers and it forever changed him. He would then move to Mt Athos in 1921. He would go on to meet Elder Ephraim of Arizona who would take St Joseph as his spiritual father. St Joseph fought against a demon of fornication for 8 years
