2017 Puligny-Montrachet, Champ Gain, 1er Cru, Domaine de la Vougeraie, BurgundyThe highest of Pulignys Premiers Crus, the altitude and poor stony soil influences a wine style that is reserved yet expressive. The vintage has given the wine plenty of power, but the bouquet is strongly fragrant of lime blossom. The wine is both energetic and rich. Drink 2023 2030. Based in Prmeaux, just south of Nuits St Georges, Domaine de la Vougeraie was created in 1999 when Jean Claude Boisset decided to group together all the vineyard holdings

Judging by this stunning

gorgeous fruit yet austere in minerality and tension

unsurprisingly

Engaging aromatics make this wine immediately attractive in the nose

weight and substance that few can match

licorice and fruitcake flavors that are sharpened by a jolt of spiciness on the back half

Ben had always harboured an ambition to make Pommard’s other great wine

and a fine top note of orange peel

but a class act for the medium to long term

Blended skilfully from thirteen parcels at both ends of the appellation

It resembled the great vintages of the 1990s and 2000s before the run of fine but hot vintages began in 2018
