Medieval Carved Polychromed Angel c.1450An incredible rare and beautifully serene depiction of an Angel c. 1450. Northern European. With large traces of original gilding and polychrome remaining. She is exceptionally carved, standing upon swirling Heavenly clouds with an expression which is gentle and contemplative. Clothed in a simple and fluid dress with minimal folding and a central button fastened clasp, her body standing in an S shaped pose. Her lips are rosy red with her curling hair

cast through the lost wax process by Sabatino de Angels & Fils who ran a bronze foundry in Naples from 1884 to early 20th century

The Foundry was renowned for their cast bronzes using the lost wax process (exactly as the original Roman statues they were casting from would have originally been created) and were given exclusivity to cast direct from incredible sculptures in the National Archeological Museum of Naples

Earlier works like these bear the makers stamp of ‘Mandeville-Combeleran’ (1880-1905)
