A Victorian Black Painted Pine Chest of Drawers c.1880Origin: EnglishPeriod: Mid VictorianProvenance: UnknownDate: c. 1880Height: 37Width: 38Depth: 20 (all at top)The Late Victorian period pine carcass of good size with a fabulous period black painted finish, naturally aged with bitumen blistering, the moulded rounded oversailing top over an arrangement of five graduated drawers, two short over three long, with the original knob handles to each, the whole sitting on shaped bracket feet and surviving form

In good overall condition the busts have not had any restoration or cleaning taken to them with the darkness to the bronze creating the impression of Berlin iron

but somehow wholly appropriate gilt frame

This very early piece was created in Mexico by Beth Carter and was made in fabric

white shirt and bow tie

which whilst that may not be suited for collectors

with vines

one figures head is lost and so are the ends of the arms and feet

(materials that were readily to hand and often inexpensive for the artisan or hobbyist)

The gliding has a rather lovely patination and shows patchy wear which makes it very decorative
